Colouring Process Rethink

Image
I have been rethinking my colouring process. and experimented with combining hand colouring with Photoshop digital colouring. I like hand colouring but my technical abilities are not up to making paintings. I like digital colouring but I loathe the amount of time it takes to prepare the Colour Flats.
A combination of the two seems to be the way forward.

Kitten Coffee Label

Image
My refillable coffee tin for weaker strength coffee needed a new label. The old one had got grubby and didn’t really reflect my morning moods of late. I drew a new one, coloured it with water colour and ‘laminated’ it to the tin with plastic tape.

Cloudbusting

Image
The Kate BushCloudbusting video(1985) is aboutWilhelm Reich, his son Peter and the invention ofOrgone Accumulatorswhich he hoped could make rain. It featuredKate Bushin a dodgy wig andDonald Sutherlandas the inventor father, Wilhelm. Not being aware of the back story back in the eighties, I imagined  there was more to the video than we were being told. The mechanical invention seems to work but fails, only to be resurrected through the flesh of his child, just in the nick of time. The psychic desire to control the elements passed down through the fathers genes (a sub plot involving him hiding the identity of his daughter from the Men from the Ministry is in there too). Desperate to save her Dad, Kate channels her mutant powers and hurls a thunderbolt at the speeding black car.

Illustration Time

Image
I have been busy with ad agency deadlines all week and finally this evening, got around to colouring my illustration for Save Our Souls magazine. It will support an article about ash dieback written by Charlotte Dixon in issue 3 (out early December 2016).

Part 1

Inktober 2016 Part 1 (Days 1 - 13)

Image
It's that time of year again, where artists who draw with ink sign up to do a drawing a day and post it online for all to see and marvel at. I started off not worrying too much about where I was going with it this year. From experience creating expectations out of thin air can create failure just as much as success. Day two I came up with a character who was either evil or a guardian and I wasn't sure if he was there to protect the child or sacrifice her (see what I mean about creating expectation).

Not all the drawings are included here as some were better than others, check out my Twitter or my Instagram feeds if you want to see everything. These drawings are done as an added extra to the working day so I wasn't going to get into 'redrawing and designing things until they look right mode' they are created day by day and I have no real idea where they are going.

As you can see I hit upon using cut outs as they find their way in to our universe, this saved me time…

Braindead X-Ray

Image
I know nothing about US political shenanigans really, apart from what I've seen on the series Braindead. For me it has been the most consistently entertaining series this year with it's tale of invading alien ants and conniving, time wasting politicians.

In reality, I suspect that politicians both UK and US, are already infected and that Braindead is indeed a documentary.

Permitted Planet Trailer Pages

Making A Short three Page Comic Strip
I was recently asked by a writer friend to do the artwork for a graphic novel trailer entitled Permitted Planet. At this point there is no money involved so wanted to balance my input and resources with potential future employment on the project.

As always it starts with a…
Script

The initial script needed a bit of script wrangling. That is breaking it down from a stream of words and arranging them into pages and panels. I had broken tasks down mentally. A day for Layouts. A day for inking. A day for colouring and a day for lettering.  I tend to procrastinate too much over jobs so the schedule is not unrealistic bit a bit 'tighter' than I would have liked. I went through page by page usually using the dialogue to decide panels size and page breaks. I had permission from the writer to add/delete bits of his writing to make it work, which I did have to do.
