Beneath My Feet

A scan of my sketchbook. My weather app said it was 2 ºC feeling more like -2ºC and it certainly did. I'd been exercising around the park beforehand so had a bit of excess body heat but it didn't last long. The fingers were the first to go after about 20minutes.

I drew 70% of the line work in the park finishing off and applying coffee wash and white ink back at home in the warm.

Abandoned Campfire Creeps

Took the long way to the supermarket via Thornes Park. Tried to find the highest point in the park and in doing so came across the smouldering remains of a campfire amongst the gnarly trees. White smoke gently drifting in the midday sun. I did a drawing but was aware of scavenging squirrels and birds scuffling about.

I finished the drawing off at home and added a coffee wash and white out to make the smoke more smoky.

Belle Vue Cemetery Stone Monument

Today was drawing outside in the freezing cold at dusk day. I'm not sure what you call these monuments in a graveyard but Belle Vue Cemetery has a couple of massive ones. A stone mason who worked on Wakefield Cathedral Spire (75 Metres) worked on this smaller version (perhaps 10 Metres high). He fell off this smaller one and killed himself.

Blade Runner 2049

I did a line drawing a few days after seeing Blade Runner 2049 in October and found time today to colour it in. I started using Photoshop and struggled with the outlining and selection process which has always frustrated me. Sure, when it's done it makes for great effect but the time it takes deadens the original art when I do it.

I fell back on watercolouring the line work and then enhancing that with Photoshop. A process I prefer. I did go further with colouring in the back ground (which you can see on instagram) but didn't like it as much as the version above.

I saw Blade Runner 2049 at Hyde Park Picture House on a tiny pixelated screen and the auditorium speakers couldn't cope with the deep base vibrating soundtrack, and still it was the best looking film I've experienced this year.

Heath Common

Today drawing at Heath Common, Wakefield. Finger numbingly cold outside.

It's okay to draw trees

Started a new Seawhite A5 landscape sketchbook today. I still feel the need to draw regularly outside, in that respect I think inktober created a good habit. November hasn't been as regular and I am noticing a difference from the days I don't draw, hopefully these little reminders to not slack off will encourage me.

Grass, Thornes Park

Agbrigg > Hepworth > Town > Thornes Park > Sandal Castle > Home.

A long walk around Wakefield on a lovely autumn day, stopped roughly half way in the park and did a bit of drawing.

Can I come in now?

The last day of this years inktober finds me back where I started the month, down by the river at The Hepworth Wakefield.

And now what am I to do. Do I carry on drawing outside?

Drawing in a cemetery

I was hear last Monday. A bit of the graveyard behind St. James Church on Denby Dale Road. It's cold today. I went running earlier but then had a cup of coffee and a mince pie at the supermarket further up the road, which warmed me up enough to go drawing for an hour at  the Church.

I felt a bit conspicuous, never sure if other people see it as disrespectful to draw in a cemetery. I know as a kid grave rubbing was highly frowned upon. Anyway. Just me. And the birds, and a dog barking, and men hammering away on an extension on a house nearby. And the trains trundling by. It's really close to train tracks.

Haunting Oakenshaw Viaduct

Oakenshaw Viaduct, Walton Colliery Nature Park.

This was just way too ambitious. The perspective is wrong. Should be more fish eye than anything. Too many bricks and stones. Anyway, had an extra hour this morning so I feel ahead of the game. Cold, but not that cold. Did explore up to the top as far as I could go. Felt a bit creepy. Decades of skivers bunking off school haunting the archways.

Walton Colliery Nature Park

Walked up a bit of the old Barnsley Canal, Crossed the road Oakenshaw Lane to Walton Colliery Nature Park and drew bridge HPC/5.

Drawing outside, but not for much longer

Drawing outside #inktober2017 Day 27. One of those cold but warm days. Thornes Park, looking West over to Gillsike House. There is a flowery nectar smell where I'm standing and it seems to be attracting flies. Let them play in the remaining hours of their short lives.

Low Light Levels

It's a low light level day. Lights on in the house type low level light. It seems sensible to head up the hill to Sandal Castle rather than lurking around shady woods. It's October half term and there are lots of people, young families, dog walkers cyclists, power walkers using the place. A pack of boys are giddy excited at climbing the 'rocks', playing tig just don't cut it any more.

Pet Cemetery, Thornes Park

Running in the park. Did a bit of drawing afterwards. Gravestones in the pet cemetery. I did hear that 'My Mouse' was a horse.

I can see my house from up here

Todays outside drawing feels like a bit of a cheat. I ventured 500 yards around the back of the allotments to the Oakenshaw Flood Alleviation Scheme. I can see the embankments from my kitchen window. It's on my doorstep but I don't go here. There's no reason apart for the sake of a short walk. I have to ask for directions on how to get to where I want. There are some secret steps that get me to a prime spot. I'm looking down on my house in the Coal Yard. A view I don't normally see.

Weather is too windy to draw straight lines. The clouds are racing with the sun creating dramatic cloudscapes and shadows. Totally different from my perspective from inside the house.

I can receive my Wi-Fi connection from here.

Dripped On By Trees

Drawing outside inktober day 23. St. James Church after a morning run around the park opposite.

There's an area around the back I'd like to explore further.

West Parade Burial Ground
inktober day 22

Sunday morning, early (ish).West Parade Burial Ground. Google tells me it's a burial ground. I thought it was just 'that bit of land' next to the job centre where they put headstones from when Wakefield Cathedral was pedestrianised a few decades ago (1984-ish).
